- Insure your fur on your homeowner's policy for its replacement value, so you won't be heartbroken in case of theft. Furriers offer nominal insurance coverage while your coat is in storage.
- Give it a good home. Be sure you put it in a closet that is not exposed to light (which will fade your fur) or heat. Be sure it is on a broad shoulder hanger and has room to breathe and isn’t being crushed by other garments. Do not cover your coat. If you have to cover it, make sure it is loose in a woven cloth bag. Do not store it in a cedar chest and keep it away from moth balls and chemicals, including perfume and hairspray.
- If your coat gets wet, shake it up and hang it up to dry naturally. Do not panic, your coat can handle the light rain and snow.
- Always send your coat on summer vacation. Send it to your furrier for professional storage. This is important every year, for a fur, a shearling, a fur-trimmed garment and even a fur hat or scarf. It is the single best thing you can do to care for your fur.
- Have your coat cleaned by a fur specialist, not a dry cleaner. Fur-trimmed garments require special attention. Ideally the fur is removed from the fabric or leather and put through the fur cleaning process. The separate fabric or leather part of the coat gets its own cleaning process. If the fur can't be removed, the entire coat gets cleaned by hand.

Given the right attention, your fur coat will make you look gorgeous for decades. While today's furs can be trendy, you can even restyle them after a few years to keep in with the modern fashion.
